Jesus in Islam
Many are surprised to hear that Muslims believe in Jesus. In Islam, Jesus holds an honored and central place as a prophet, miraculously born and bearer of a holy message.
Jesus as a prophet
In Islam, Jesus (Isa in Arabic) is one of the greatest prophets God sent. He was sent to the Children of Israel with a message about God, justice, and mercy.
Muslims believe in his miracles – such as healing the sick and raising the dead – by God's permission.
The miraculous birth
Muslims believe that Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary (Maryam) without a father – a sign of God's power. Mary holds a very high and honored place in Islam.
The event is described beautifully in the Quran, and Mary is the only woman mentioned by name in the book.
What Muslims do not believe about Jesus
Muslims do not believe that Jesus is God's son in a literal sense, or that he is part of a trinity. They also do not believe he was crucified.
According to Islam, Jesus was raised to God, and it was not Jesus who suffered on the cross. This is an important distinction between Islam and Christianity.
Respect and common ground
Despite differences in belief, Jesus is deeply respected in Islam. Speaking negatively about him or any of the prophets is considered serious.
For many Muslims and Christians, conversations about Jesus can be a place for mutual respect and learning – not conflict.
